A Button, I created a button

I'm sometimes not the sharpest tool in the shed, but today I added a button to the "places I am" widget.

Uploaded the image file, got the code, made out like I understood HTML coding... result!

Small things make me smile.

I was had

I've been hectoring MrsPdubyah to trade-in her car for something newer, smaller, more economical. It's a long sales cycle.

There are a number of discrete stages.

  • Suggestion.

  • Pause for a few days, or more.

  • Suggestion.

  • Pause for a few days, or more.

  • Look and point at cars.

  • Pause for a few days, or more.

  • Suggest again trading the old car for a new one

  • Pause for a few days, or more.

  • Whilst out doing things stop at a car yard and mooch about pointing at a cars.

  • Ignore sales person

  • Pause for a few days, or more.

Today however was a bit of  a breakthrough, there was agreement to at least go to look at a specific car model at a specific yard. Which we did.

It was then the wool was pulled over my eyes when MrsPdubyah says "Lets to to the car yard in Albany, then we can at least say that we've looked there and can cross it off" Since it was on the way home, or not to far out of the way of course I agreed. More in shock.

Oh yes, of course the specific car was available on the lot, and we went for a drive. "Oh I knew this was here, I looked it up the internet"

This isn't the first time that this has happened although in the past MrsPdubyah might have taken a test drive already. Seems not this time,

Then I get more questions about engine sizes of different versions of the model, and there again I was had when I was schooled in a number of features. Oh and further to that there are other car yards where similar models can be found, if I could see my way clear to chauffeur to and fro. Way to spend a Sunday.

So now it all depends on the trade-in value of the old jalopy as to whether we go any further.

Paying it forward.

I  left work late tonight and on the way to the motorway I passed a car stopped by the roadside not where you would expect, and just before where I would normally get on the motorway home.

I pulled over. Just because.

So there was a Mitsi Wagon by the side of the road with a flat tyre. A young girl was jumping up and down and waving, her parents were less enthusiastic. It had caught my eye the enthusiasm of youth :-)

Turns out they'd borrowed the car to get to a church thing and it had ended up with a flat tyre, and a missing spare and also a missing jack and tools. Not a good thing.

They were dressed ensemble and were on their way to Glenn Innes for a church thing. A Trumpet in hand, trust me, it was a thing.

All dressed up, looking great. Broken Car.

I gave Mother- Wendy, Daughter Sarah and father, a 70 years old, not a word of spoken English, a drive to the church. Ways out of my way and the opposite of home a lift.

Why? Because, just because.

I went back and the father who still couldn't fix his tyre, he used my phone to call someone, hopefully to get him fixed up and to the church with his family. For me Granddad, mother and child were at the event to take part.

It bring me happiness to think of that at least most of them got to where they aimed for, the Church event with trumpets and dress up.

Is this either significant or important?

Not at all.

Why am I sharing?

Because we all have it in us to pay it forward a thing. For me, having stopped, it was important they got to their church thing, and that they had a chance to do their thing than it was for me to be home.

I share because you have it in you to pay it forward.

And you should.

Without reservation.

Because you can, and because they're people like you who you can help if you can. And because it's just the right thing to do.

Pat myself on the back, and +1 and all that and a thumbs up, not about that, just about the "right thing" and very few things I have to do are more important or more pressing than being, well, just nice.

He said.

* updated

And then I had the angst.

So great, I did a thing and now I'm telling you in a self centred way about just how great that was.

Yeah, Na,. It's about how I was driven home after my running breakdown and torn calf muscle, the person you lent a dollar to for parking, the seat you gave up on the bus. It about how your mum and dad would smile, the child you smiled at. the kind word to a stranger in a shop. All those things.

Embrace those. Pay it forward. Sometimes someone pays it to you.

So, as an aside to all that

I was looking for beer from Sacramento and ended buying beer from Iceland. "Could I drink all the beer" was the question. Clearly no, you could drink a beer of each style, or all the 'regular' beer from, say, New Zealand, or Oregon, or California, if you had the time. You couldn't drink the seasonal or the specials or one-offs and keep up. I think, unless you had a lot of cash and no job.

Anyway I have no idea how a beer from Iceland gets to New Zealand,  my 'source' for beer tells me there are 5 beers from Iceland, which I find hard to believe, all from the same brewery, and I have 3 of them.

This may not end well.   Wikipedia thinks there may be 5 or 6 Iceland breweries, I had to go back and count, and it was 7.

As an aside to all that, since I began thinking about beer a bit more, and keeping a diary at Ratebeer.com, I've drunk and rated 152 beers from 10 countries, which will move to 11 when I had the Icelandic things,

1 each from  - Scotland, Norway, Japan

2 each from - Germany, Australia, Netherlands,

9 from my homeland of birth England

10 from a country where I thought I drank heaps from -  Belgium - in reality I've drunk a lot of beers from here, just not at home where I write about them :-)

31 from the US of A (16 from California, 11 from Oregon,  3 from Delaware and 1 from NY)

and an incredible 94 from New Zealand

I drink a lot (relative) of IPA, which I still think is an easy go to beer for a brewer, but a fair sprinkle of APA, Porters, Amber Ales,  and then DoubleIPA's and so on.

According to the diary the best beer I ever had was  a

Eagle vs Dog Episode 2 Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster

then the Garage Project Cockswain’s Courage Blended Porter

then Liberty C!tra

5th place is the overseas beer the  Rogue Farms OREgasmic Ale which is still a beer I buy regularly, and the Liberty C!tra). That's impressive given that there are some nice beers to be had around here.

I should get out more :-) or I should drink from more countries, I'd think it amounted to the same thing.

The one with the updated Resume / CV thing

I've been reviewing my resume / CV thing.

I've been with the same company since 1999, so that'd be 13 years and a half.

In that time I've had at least 4 different definable positions, and a few other side projects.

It's been a goodly amount of learning, adventure, experience and enjoyment.

But it behoves me to update the information and make sure that my CV is as presentable s possible, because you never know.

Depending on who you talk to there are a number of "best practice" things that you "have" to have.

So I had to sit, think and then make the words make sense. I don't think I'm a fantastic wordsmith, or even an average one, but these are things that might daunt the average person

The best practice things that should be included are;

  • A Career "Objective"

  • My key "Attributes"

  • A "Personal Statement"

Then list the things that I'd done with the highlights of the wins that were important

Then I had to think of some referee's
Then if I was involved in some things, like coaching or community - apparently to make me human

It's all very difficult

Ms17 and the driving licence

After the last effort, where 40 in a 50, and 50 in a 60 zone don't cut it for the examiner, Ms17 had another crack at it today, in the showery rain, and passed.

This is going to bring whole new new freedoms, such as staying out after 10pm, and being able to "lift" people to and from.

And it's just awesome.

Day Five of less of me

Five in a row, it helps that it's sunny in the mornings of course, and today being a Saturday was a couple hours later. Slightly longer less pain and I'm sitting here smiling. All is good in the hood.

The all new me, day 2

Consecutive walks. 6am, cold as a cold thing, but 40 solid minutes of walking. Problem is I'm now hungry in the car on the drive to work.

Friday, May 11, 2012

Not a complete disaster but...

tragedy could have been averted by not driving at 40 in a 50 zone and 50 in a 60 zone.

Driving like you're driving for Miss daisy isn't going to get you a full license, so for Ms17 it's back to a re-sit and a bit of a delay.

And of course this is another story that my daughter has that ended in tears.

Slightly Angry and confused

This I imagne would be all too common a communication from the Police;

I'm contacting you in regards to the burgalry (sic)  that occurred at your house approximately 3 weeks ago.

The Police have caught an offender, who has admitted his involvement. He is 16 years old, and the file has been forwarded to the Manurewa Police Youth Aid section for action.

The youth aid team will have a meeting with the offender and his parents and decide the appropirate  (sic) way to proceed. It is possible that the offender will be charged and have to appear in the Manukau Youth Court, however there are several meetings between the offender, Police and youth advocates before this decision will be made.

The Youth Aid team will call and advise you of updates as the case proceeds.

Realistically the case will take several months until its completion. Unfortunately the Police have not recovered any property at this stage.

So, of legal age do do many things (although of age does not equate to of competence), and has confessed or admitted guilt. Couple of questions;

  • Why not deal with this in court now?

  • If he's confessed to burglary then he's disposed of the burglarized property somewhere to someone. The stupid part of me says follow the money and see where or who he sold it to and eventually you'll get it back? How naeive is that?

  • Advocates? for what?

  • Police Youth Aid?  How about Police Youth Crime solving and sentencing?

  • More meetings? for what?

  • It's only 'possible' that a self-confessed burglar may go to court.

  • Can't the police spell?

Likely then that the advocates, an overworked police force, and the parents will agree some sort of dubious reparation and wrist slapping punishment that means the "youth" might learn a short term lesson, but when a new shiny thing becomes his desire then he'll be in the back window quicker than you can blink.

Or I'm being cynical and this is a half for the good guys, it might have been a one but there is no sign of the missing items, yet,

If it were me

If it were me I would ban the way cafe's wrap the cutlery in a paper serviette, tightly, that it is a mission to unwrap, and pretty obvious something was wet when it was done. That is all.

Trying Teen Times – the grown up one - Part the Third

I grit my teeth, oh I really do.

Daughter will not keep here room space tidy. I get surface mess, I just don't appreciate piles of clothes, It's very trying.

Son leaves everything to the last moment, or never, and this too is fractious and disturbing. Today it was his lack of petrol in the car, oh and a flat battery, and then expecting everyone to run around after him to sort it all out. Enough to make you mad as a mad thing.

Secret Santa

It's an opt in for the company, and I put all the opt-in names into a hat, well to be precise a beanie.

I then go around armed with the beanie and a clip-board of names of the combatants

3 people pulled a named from the beanie then told me who they had picked. Idiots. How is that a secret?

I made them put the name back and pick a new one.

Lets the games begin

An Unnamed Economics professor, at an unnamed school, on Socialism

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

  1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

  2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

  3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

  4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

  5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.
